Recently my wife found this excellent website: http://www.akiane.com. It has pictures drawn and painted by a child prodigy, Akiane. I would heartily recommend having a look: see her “Prince of Peace” for example…
…If you made it back from that link (and I don’t blame you if you didn’t), many of her pictures put me in mind of Heaven. Many of them have themes like hopefulness or goodness of some kind, along with being actually beautiful, (as contrasted with the infamous “unmade bed” of modern art). I think one of the things Christians have to do is really get excited about Heaven. Indeed, historically, those with their “heads in the clouds” often had more of an impact on earth, where they kept their “feet on the ground” and spent their lives glorifying God.
Here are just some of the ideas that give us an inkling of what Heaven is…
It’s a wedding feast! Ever been excited about going to a party? Ever been invited to a royal one? (They must have missed me off the mailing list the last few times). Well, heaven is an amazing royal wedding feast celebrating the union of the Son (Jesus) with His Bride (the Church). It is a final union of us who currently are separated to the extent that we see only a dim reflection but then will see “face to face“. Finally we will be as close as it is possible to be to the Lord and to one another. You will be at the best party ever held! The best thing? It never ends: you don’t even have to pack it all up afterwards!
Ever wanted to be where “the multitudes of heaven worship“? Where the angels and people chosen by God can just keep singing and praising for the joy that is in their heart, where no practical consideration can sweep this aside? Well, you can.
Ever wanted all that was terrible and evil and rotten in the world to be put right? Well, Heaven is where righteousness looks down from. It is a place where justice will have been perfectly carried out, tempered by infinite mercy, where there can be no corruption (I mean, look at the Boss!) and where even those who have been attacked and imprisoned for much of their lives on the earth can call these things “light and momentary troubles“. You will be fully compensated! You will not feel cheated! Unlike earthly products the reality of Heaven is so much infinitely better than the advertising which describes it!
Ever wanted your body to be made absolutely perfect? To be able to leap like a deer? And the earth? Do you want it to be utterly beautiful, as it must have been at its creation? Look at Isaiah 35:5-7…
“Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped.
Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy.
Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert.
The burning sand will become a pool, the thirsty ground bubbling springs.
In the haunts where jackals once lay, grass and reeds and papyrus will grow.”
Can you see how the human frame is restored beyond anything it was capable of on earth and the earth too will be restored? Will there not be a “new heavens* and a new earth“? And a “new Jerusalem“? You and all the earth can be made perfect! Not through human effort now, but the power of God! For this world will “wear out like a garment“. But all things will be made utterly perfect: us, the earth, and Jerusalem, the Holy City where God lives with men!
The animals too will live in harmony: no more carnivores! Note also that the heaven we are headed for includes a definite physical nature, not a wispy ghost-life! For Jesus’ body vanished from the tomb! It was not His Spirit alone that appeared to the disciples but a body so perfect that even horrible wounds that would have killed Him, had He had a normal body, served only as reminders of His triumph on the cross. If He is the first-fruits then we can expect to be raised just like Him, for “the body that is sown is perishable [but] it is raised imperishable“!
(*The “heavens” mentioned here are the sky and space-type ones, not the place where God is most fully present. Oh and sorry if you want to “save the Earth” by being “green”: we are commanded to be responsible stewards- see Genesis- but we do not have the power to make the world perfect like this!)
If you have not yet trusted in Jesus, and you want to come to heaven, please do! Put your trust in Him, because He paid the price by His own blood, so that we could come in trusting His righteousness rather than the sinking sand of our own! Even better, the experience starts now (though it won’t be even remotely fully realised until this life ends), and we can be part of God’s Kingdom of Heaven* on earth.
*No not the one where a lot of English knights go to Jerusalem to put swords into people, the real one!
Finally it is worth noting that I have not even scratched the surface of what Heaven is like! For more information have a look at this excellent children’s book by Kathleen Bostrom, or do a search through Biblegateway for references to Heaven:
